After an extensive and in-depth research into the topic regarding the United States-Mexico Border Issue, I have come to a few conclusions. First and foremost, through our research we have found that an increase in border security is a must, and more fencing needs to be built along the border. Second, areas around the border can be very violent. Lastly, the border provides the United States with its source for the majority of illegal narcotics.
First, the need for a stronger border is without question necessary. The border allows thousands and thousands of illegal immigrants into the United States every year, many with ease. In addition, because of the lack of security, there is over 11 million undocumented people in this country. According to Loren Brown in "The effects of illegal immigration on organizational efficiency and effectiveness: a United States analysis," "At $113 billion per year in costs to the U.S. generated by the presence of 11 million illegal immigrants, government would be well-advised to do more to curb the flow through the borders." The amount of money that the government spends to compensate these undocumented people is absurd. Just imagine where all the money could go to every year. To us, it is almost sickening. In addition, by not crossing through the designated entrances, these people may also bring contagious illnesses into the United States, where otherwise they would have been screened at the designated entrance by medical professionals.
Second, the border is known for its drug and human smuggling. Drug cartels rely on the United States for a large portion of their income. That being said, these cartels and smugglers have tunnels built under the walls, certain routes across the border and some even via water. Some tunnels are so extensive that they even have air conditioning in them. That being said, the drug cartels care about one thing; money. If they don't get their money, somebody is going to be killed, regardless if they deserved it. Because of the extreme violence of these cartels, many communities along the border experience large amounts of violence and innocent people are killed because of it. A stronger border is not only just to keep out unwanted immigrants, but also violence to innocent Americans.
Third, drug smuggling is one of the most crucial and main reason for a beef-up in border security. According to Shirelle Phelps and Jeffery Lehman, in "Mexico and the United States", "With some experts claiming that Mexico is responsible for 70 percent of the illegal drugs in the United States, the war on drugs remains a source of friction between the two countries." If the United States was able to strengthen the border and stop smuggler more regularly and efficiently, the government would be able to stop the amount of illegal drugs that come into our country by a staggering number. In addition to stopping the amount of illegal narcotics coming in, the United States would also be able to severely hurt the drug cartels by basically taking away a large portion of their sales.
In conclusion, the people of the United States need policy passed to not only help the country be more efficient, but also become safer. With all the facts that have just been presented, it should be obvious that policy in regards to possibly more troops on the border, more technology assistance to the border patrol, and definitely more miles of secure fence to be built. Also, we are requesting that there be an increase in government funding for border security. It is a means of not only public safety, but economic efficiency and a fight against the drugs.
